Fundamentally these hot new ideas want to improve the productivity and efficiency of government, local authority and civil service bodies and we the people are our own ability to govern ourselves and improve the world around us.

And it’s an area the UK Government itself it embracing with it’s own Catalyst Fund. And where the government goes the big consultancies follow suit but in this list we look at the more nimbler scales ups bringing new ideas and innovation to our civil world.
So to keep track of the companies in this exciting and worthy sector we’re started this list and will be adding to it each month.

The experts in natural language conversation-as-a-service.
Futr is in the business of producing natural language chatbots for central government organisations as well as police, emergency and rescue forces by providing chatbots to staff and citizens to use every day very much like Facebook Messenger, Skype and Slack.
2. Novoville


Novoville is a comprehensive civic engagement platform for local governments. Reach citizens instantly, manage their requests, and make better decisions and aims to “make local government services citizen-centric”

Novoville aims to do this by making it easier for members of the public to interact with their local government or authority by allowing citizens (us!) to submit requests and find info including web consultations and via IM (instant messaging) as well as a simple web based payments system for services such as paying parking fines and council tax bills.

Built–ID showcases the projects of today and empowers communities to better shape the projects of tomorrow.

Built-ID does this by providing an online tool called Give My View that gives local communities the ability to influence building schemes in their area by connecting them with developers and local councils and giving them the ability to much easier vote on proposals.
4. Babylon


Babylon is one of the largest HeathTech and GovTech startups in the UK with a Billion+ valuation.

As a mobile health platform it is used to power the NHS’ GP at Hand service which allows patients to book appointments and talk to their doctor through their smartphone in certain regional NHS trusts like Hammersmith & Chelsea
5. Citymapper



Citymapper is a great app and has developed a superb smart mapping platform for cities.
City Mapper does this using real-time data to optimise public transport routes and journey planning for both users and also organisations like Transport for London.
6. Dark Trace


Darktrace’s pioneering technology, the Enterprise Immune System, applies AI to the cyber defense challenge for the first time, and has proven itself successful in detecting cyber-threats that existing, legacy systems cannot.

It’s both! GovTech refers to both the category of innovative startups who are applying emerging technologies (such as A.I, blockchain, etc) to improve the delivery of public services through increasing efficiency and improved productivity and the actually technology itself
No, it’s a free market like any. However, the UK Government for example, has a Catalyst fund to stimulate growth and support small startups develop ideas and many GovTech Startups do require a government, local authority or public service to purchase their tech to survive.
Yes you can apply to the Government fund if in place. In the UK, for example, it’s called the GovTech Fund and it is a £20 million fund used to develop, test and access innovative solutions to solve complex public sector problems.
You can also try the GovTech Catalyst fund aimed at small startups organised into annual cohorts or programs.
