AIMA and Marex survey finds emerging hedge fund breakeven has risen to US$82.9m

The fifth Emerging Manager Survey shows smaller hedge funds building headcount and infrastructure earlier, with higher costs to reach breakeven.

The Stacking Up: Emerging Manager Survey 2026, co-authored by Marex and AIMA, draws on responses from 180 hedge fund managers with up to US$1 billion in assets and 50 institutional investors.

Emerging managers now employ an average of 10 people, up from 7 in the previous survey.

Average breakeven has risen by almost a fifth to US$82.9m.

86% of investors in the study cited operational due diligence as the biggest barrier to allocation.

Management fees average 1.43%, while performance fees rose slightly from 16.22% in the 2024 survey to 16.24%.
