TPG-Backed Ahh Acquires Controlling Stake in Asian Institute of Nephrology & Urology

Asia Healthcare Holdings (AHH), a single specialty healthcare delivery platform backed by US private equity firm TPG Growth, has acquired a majority stake in Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU) for Rs 600 crore.

The investment was made through a mix of primary and secondary infusion. AINU is India’s largest single specialty hospital network of urology and nephrology care, with a presence in four cities.

The acquisition marks AHH’s foray into the urology and nephrology segment. Since its launch in 2017, AHH has acquired single specialty chains such as CTSI (oncology), Motherhood Hospitals (women and child health), and Nova IVF (infertility).

AINU was founded in 2013 by a team of leading urologists and nephrologists led by C Mallikarjuna and P C Reddy. Since then, it has become a pioneering hospital network in the Urology & Nephrology clinical specialty in the country. The company currently operates seven hospitals across Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Siliguri, and Chennai. The network has more than 500 beds, has treated over 400,000 patients, and completed over 50,000 procedures. AINU has taken a leadership position in the country in the area of robotic urology surgery, having completed over 1,000 surgeries with the use of robotic technology. On the nephrology front, more than 200,000 dialysis and 300 kidney transplants have been performed by the enterprise.

Enhance Your Healthcare Expertise with High-Impact Courses

AHH’s acquisition of AINU not only adds a new specialty to the AHH platform but also strengthens its vision of scaling the single specialty healthcare delivery ecosystem in the country. AINU’s expertise in urology and nephrology care will complement AHH’s existing portfolio of single specialty chains. The acquisition will also enable AHH to offer high-impact courses to enhance healthcare expertise.

The Indian School of Business offers a Healthcare Management course, which can be accessed through its college course website. The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode offers a Healthcare Management & Analytics Programme. Both courses will help healthcare professionals enhance their expertise and stay ahead of the curve.

India is among the top three nations globally that has the highest incidence of urological disorders. The high incidence of diabetes and hypertension is also accelerating the prevalence of chronic kidney disease. Around 10% of the Indian population suffers from chronic kidney disease, and every year over one lakh cases of renal failure are reported, making nephrology care a key focus area for patients in India.

There are 6,000 qualified urologists and 3,500 nephrologists in India. Approximately 350 urologists and 250 nephrologists graduate each year in India, and the rise of laparoscopic, endoscopic, and robotic surgical options gives a compelling growth opportunity for AINU to scale across the metros and tier 2 cities in the country. AINU’s market leadership, growth capital, and healthcare quality make it an attractive investment opportunity for AHH. AHH’s global network, operating expertise, and clinical practices will enable AINU to achieve better outcomes and provide better care to patients across South Asia.
