Snapshot: Groupe Barrière In France Restructures With New Exec Appointment

As first covered by Law.com, Private equity-linked restructuring work is on the rise in France as companies regroup for the post-pandemic era.

A recent example is the multibillion-euro restructuring of Groupe Barrière, a 111-year-old family-controlled enterprise that owns and operates luxury properties under the Barrière and Fouquet’s brands.

The restructuring involved consolidation of ownership among several family companies. This trend is indicative of the investment opportunities in the French private equity industry, which is attracting a growing number of investors and funds.

Grégory Rabuel: The CEO Leading Groupe Barrière to Success

Grégory Rabuel, former CEO of Altice France and SFR, has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of Barrière, a century-old French family-owned group. He takes up his position with immediate effect and is tasked with spearheading the group towards growth, development, and diversification in its activity, both in France and worldwide.

Rabuel has worked for over 20 years in the telecoms and media industry, contributing to the development and diversification of one of Europe’s leading companies in the sector. He started his career at Bouygues Telecom as a business engineer in charge of large corporate accounts before joining SFR as a regional sales director for SFR Business.

In 2009, he was appointed commercial director for Numericable, in charge of BtoB and BtoC activities. Following the SFR buyout in 2014, he was promoted to CEO of SFR Distribution, which manages a network of 1,000 shops, telesales, and the group’s digital business. He joined SFR’s executive committee three years later.

As BtoC and BtoB director, he managed the group’s commercial, marketing, digital, communications, and customer service activities. In 2019, Rabuel became CEO for SFR, which at the time was turning over €10.7 billion, with 25 million customers and 13,000 employees. In 2021, he was appointed CEO of Altice France and its SFR, BFM TV, and RMC brands, expanding his responsibilities including media activities.

Throughout his career, Rabuel has focused on business development, driven by sales growth, digital and omnichannel transformation, as well as enhancing the customer experience and promoting team engagement. In 2023, he joined Barrière Group as Chief Executive Officer with the ambition of accelerating the group’s development, diversifying its business activity in France and abroad, and strengthening its position as a market leader.

The executive committee, headed by Rabuel, is responsible for deploying the group’s strategy in France and abroad. The group operates 32 casinos, 18 hotels, 140 restaurants and bars, and employs over 7,000 people. Barrière Group is a leader in the French hospitality industry, with a history dating back to 1912 when the Société Fermière du Casino Municipal de Cannes was created. The group is committed to its values of excellence, innovation, and customer service.
